Standard vitamin B1 (thiamine) is water-soluble. To get from the gut into the body it rides a transporter in the gut wall called ThTR-2. In 2020, researchers at UCSF screened 1,360 compounds against that transporter. 146 blocked it.
Eleven were prescription drugs that reach the gut at concentrations high enough to matter, by the study’s own threshold. The list is ordinary: metformin, sertraline, amitriptyline, amoxapine, hydroxychloroquine, trimethoprim (half of Bactrim), verapamil, quinidine, quinapril, and penicillamine. In hospital records, people taking these drugs had lower blood thiamine than people who were not, most clearly in those already at risk.
